Understanding Professional Duties

This course reviews the landscape of ethical obligations, including an overview of fiduciary duty regulations and their evolution toward the best interest standard of practice. The course will discuss the implications for ethical practice in financial services. Finally, the course will present information on hot topics in ethics and disclosure and transparency practices, including behavioral science research on when disclosure may not be sufficient to address ethical concerns.

This course does not provide legal or compliance guidance on fiduciary or best-interest standards. It is designed to educate at a high level about the sources of law and duties that relate to the financial profession, so that students are well informed about the background and history of their ethical and professional responsibilities.

​Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this learning activity, you will confidently be able to:​

  • Differentiate among regulatory standards for behavior in insurance agencies, securities dealing, and investment advice.
  • Evaluate the evolution of client standards and the convergence of standards toward the “best interest” standard for consumers.
  • Understand conflicts of interest that may arise in business and how to manage them.
  • Identify best practices for naming conventions and designations.
  • Evaluate the importance of disclosures and the information asymmetry inherent in any financial advisory relationship, as well as how disclosures may not resolve ethical dilemmas.
  • Describe the importance of ethical culture and ethical leadership, and the tools of practice in an organized setting.
