In this module, students learn where Principal Gifts fit in Nonprofit Gift Planning for larger organizations, in particular, the Colleges and Universities survey conducted in 2022 by the Council for Support and Advancement of Education.

​Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this learning activity, you will confidently be able to:​

  • Understand the difference between Annual, Major, and Planned gifts and Principal Gifts with respect to size, structure, purpose and level of engagement by institutional leaders.
  • State the sources of Principal Gifts by category, in particular with respect to private philanthropic tools.
  • State the percentage of Principal Gifts that are unrestricted, in comparison to those that are donor-restricted as to purpose.
